trolling motor shaft length

I am getting ready to get a 50# minn kota powerdrive that has the long shaft, it came off a pontoon boat. I plan on cutting the shaft and wanted to see the length you guys thought would be a good length. I have looked and the most common length seems to be 48". It will be mounted on the front of my new 14 ft flat bottom.

I wouldn't cut anything off until you try it. Longer is often better. Shorter is a pain in the back.
