Front deck on a 10ft jon boat

Fished for years out of a 10 foot jon with pedestal seats mounted to the benches. Yeah, it was tippy but we never spilled. If youre careful, it can certainly be done. Good communication in the boat will go a long way. Honestly though, better for one to stand while the other sits.... and...

86 Johnson 15 hp disappointing power at WOT

Tried trim setting on lowest and second lowest position with no change. Motor, trolling motor, battery, and myself were all in the back of the boat. 150 lbs. passenger and 15 lbs anchor in the center. Choke opens and closes fully using adjustment knob but throttle seems to only open around...

86 Johnson 15 hp disappointing power at WOT

Thanks for the tips guys. Will give it a whirl and see if it helps. I am thinking the problem may be engine related. It is hard to describe but it almost seems like the engine isn't fully opening up. Almost like a ridding mower set to turtle speed instead of rabbit. Not sure if there is...

86 Johnson 15 hp disappointing power at WOT

So I finally got a chance to test the motor after carb clean and rebuild, along with lower unit service and new spark plugs. I've been really anxious to test the performance since this is my first outboard. It started fine with just a few pulls but needs a tad bit of throttle to run at idle...

Lower unit leak or Crud in exhaust?

Exhaust is through hub. The oil I used is blue. Gonna go with this being from the exhaust. Thanks for the input guys. This is my first outboard and I think I keep looking for problems that may not be there.

Lower unit leak or Crud in exhaust?

Hey guys, got a question about something I noticed while running my 1986 Johnson 15 hp on muffs today. I finally got the lower unit back together after replacing the outer prop seal. I then refilled with new oil and ran the motor on idle for roughly 5 minutes. Before that, it has been a year...

    Muffs vs Barrel vs Lake?

Thanks for all the info guys. I think I'll just be using the muffs for idle check and fwd/rev check at idle.

    Muffs vs Barrel vs Lake?

Hey guys! I'm pretty new to the forum, and have already learned so much. I'm also new to outboards. I recently bought an 86 Johnson 15 hp, and have been performing a bit of maintenance here and there trying to get it running properly. I hope to have everything back together by this weekend...

Rustoleum Self Etching Primer not Sticking

Johnny, Thanks for your well written response. I believe you may have hit the nail on the head. Two days later, and the primer can still be easily scratched right off. I'm just not sure why so many people recommend this primer if it is so temperamental to work with. I am no professional...

    Another jon rebuild

My advice is to absolutely get that crack repaired. You should be able to find a shop that welds aluminum for a reasonable price. Definitely don't want a crack in the transom.

    cutting out flotation

Took out all of mine possible. If my boat sinks I know how to swim and always have a life jacket. Although, I removed my foam due to water logging. Boat must be 30 lbs. lighter now.

Rustoleum Self Etching Primer not Sticking

Well, crud. I put the first coat on super light, but there was quite a bit of bare aluminum so I put on a second coat to cover all the aluminum. I really don't wanna scrape this boat down again. It has been a pretty big task.

Rustoleum Self Etching Primer not Sticking

I have been sanding the paint off of an old 1436 Alweld I recently bought. What a job it has been! I will never completely strip another boat as long as I live. To prep for the painting I rinsed the boat, then used 80 grit sand paper to scuff the surface of the entire boat. After that I...
