    EPA gas tanks

I just bought a new 15hp Tohatsu to replace my aging (read broken) Johnson outboard. Love the new motor but they only give you a 3 gallon gas tank with it. The owners manual has all kinds of cautions about only using EPA approved pressurized tanks and special hoses. Can I just cut the end...

    Transom trolling motor mount.

I treated myself to a Minn Kota Riptide 45 V/T trolling motor for my Birthday. This is my first trolling motor and while the motor itself is fine I find its now pretty cramped with the outboard. What have others done? I have 14' Sylvan with a low transom and with the trolling motor on the flat...

What do you use under the cowling?

I've been religious about flushing the motor after running in salt water. While getting ready for the season I was replacing the pugs and notice light corrosion on a number of metal components. Nothing major just that light oxidation you get on aluminum and other non steel metals. What do folks...

    Repacking bearings

I’m in the process of repacking my trailer bearings. (1”) I took off the left side, laid everything out and didn’t get back to it for a few days while I waited for the seals I ordered to come in. When I went to put everything back together I noticed that I didn’t have a washer to put between...

    Transducer mounting quest.

OK, so I'm getting ready to mount my Lowrance Elite-4 that I bought last November (on sale). Do most people drill a large hole to pass the cable through the transom or do you just go up and over? The directions say to mount it at least a foot away from the motor, I was going to go as far to...

    Stuck in gear.

Johnson 15hp 1984 electric start. Well, not really stuck just hard to move with the engine off. Now that I’m up and running I’m looking into the finer points of outboard motor usage. I’ve very careful to shift to neutral before shutting it off, but a couple of times I’ve had it die while in...

    Carpet installation

I’ve finished the floor in my 14’ Sylvan Super Snapper and I’m ready to put down some carpet. I was looking at the Lancer carpet that The Sportsman’s Guide carries. With membership they want $80.99 for a 6’ x 20’ piece, 16oz./yd. That’s like $4/running foot 6’ wide and I can get free...

    Splayed wheels.

After completely disassembling my trailer, scraping and painting it I’ve put it all back together and noticed that the wheels are slightly splayed out. I've checked and there is only one way to mount the axel so I know I didn't reverse anything. Is it normal to have some angle or is this the...

    %#@!* motor!!

I picked up a '84 Johnson 15hp electric start in the spring. It started every time I tried it ether in the barrel or lately on the muffs. I spent the last 3 months fixing the trailer and putting a new floor in the boat. I took it out once a couple of weeks ago when I was testing for leaks. It...

    Small cleat

I'm looking for something to tie off my crabbing lines. I was thinking a miniature cleat maybe 1". Anybody seen anything that small or have an idea for tieing off? Thanks

Should I add an inline fuel filter?

I have to replace the fuel line connector anyway (the spring broke) should I add an inline fuel filter while I’m at it? I know there is a screen in the fuel pump (’84 15hp Johnson) but it seems like low cost insurance against any crap in the tank.

    Proper trim?

I finally put the boat in the water for the first time, mainly to check for leaks before I put the foam and floor back in. I had to test out the motor though. Now its been 40+ years since I used a small boat so bear with me. On a 14 ft sylvan with a '84 15 hp Johnson, a 80lb battery, 4 gallons...

    Transom saver install

I'm almost to the point of putting my boat in the water. One thing I wanted to install was a transom saver. It looks relatively cheap and would help prevent rotational force on the transom. My problem is that the boat extends a good foot or better beyond the roller so that with the transom...

    Oarlocks. Pin, ring or clamp?

I’m about to order a set of oars and was wondering what the preference is for oarlocks?

Live well or no live well?

I’m restoring my new to me 14’ Sylvan. It came with a split seat instead of a middle bench, and the left hand side was removed at some point. From what I can find out a live well was an option but I don’t think this had a factory one. There is an over flow fitting that was installed but it has...

Any good Aluminum welders in CT?

I have a 1 1/4" hole that the PO put in for a live well, that I'd like to get welded up. Anybody know of a decent welder in the central CT area?

    Stern running light mount?

I’m going to add running lights as part of my rebuild. 14’ Sylvan V bottom The front nav lights are no problem but I’m having trouble with the stern one. I don’t want a permanent pole sticking up and I don’t want the fold down either. I doubt I use it very much just want to have it in case I...

    Rivet fell out.

It's always something. I was using a wire brush on the inside on the rivets getting ready to paint all of them with Gluvit. When I looked down I could see the rivet had fallen out!! I read a bunch of posts here and I think I understand the sizing. A couple of questions though. The hole...

I just took out 150 lbs of waterlogged foam.

When I got my boat it had a newer plywood deck over the older deck. I removed and saved the newer plywood and proceeded to rip up the old rotted floor. When I got to the foam I could tell it was water logged so I started removing that too. I saved it all and weighed it when I was done. There...

Anchor tie off and running lights.

I'm fixing things up and am about to mount the running lights on the bow. If i didn't have the light I would put a cleat on the bow but I don't think there is room for both. Plus I would thing that either the cleat would block the lights or the anchor line might rub against the lights. Where...
