    1971 Starcraft refit

Awesome work! I have a 1973 14' Starcraft mariner that looks exactly like yours. I am inspired to get back to work on it seeing your progress. Thanks for posting. Well done.

'87 Bluefin Sportsman 1700 Rebuild - Family Cruiser

Will you be able to save the consoles? I see you have the 85hp force on yours. That should be good fun. I had an 88 just like yours except it had the 50hp on it and man it was a weenie! If you strip out all the crap and build lightweight that boat should move pretty quick with the 85 on it.

are you Locked down? lets see your projects...

I bought one of those brand spanking new in 1988. A 17ft Blue Fin Sportsman, same color. Was a nice boat but was underpowered with a 50hp Force outboard on it. The hull rating was for an 85HP, that would have been a bit more fun to have had that. Kinda of shocking to see the interior trashed...

    leaky rivets.....an after thought

Would some glass cloth and epoxy resin work to patch the cracks? Since I laminated my new transom boards with the Raka stuff I been finding all kind of other uses for it. Wonderful stuff. I just don't know how well it would adhere to bare aluminum or how long it would last in an exterior hull...

    Replacing transom

Hey thanks for posting that tip---awesome!

    This old Bayrunner

"Do you think that's enough to hold it? I was going back on itself again and it still seems sketchy." You will have to test it, I have zero experience with that type. So how did you know your stator had ten poles? Is it something you eyeball or from some reference? I need to add a tach to my...

    This old Bayrunner

Marine Grade Plywood - an editorial

Excellent write up Johnny! Thanks. I could not get marine grade plywood, even in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex without jumping thru hoops. It is available but prices (high) all over the map and long drives involved to pick it up. For my transom and decking I am taking a chance on 1/2...

-NEED HELP- Aluminum Boat Transom question

Welding a stack of aluminum square tubing sounds like a great idea to me. Very strong! I am working on my third plywood transom attempt which unless I dorf it somehow looks like a go. First "prototype" was two 3/4" exterior plywood glues with titebond 3 and screws. Bad batch of plywood---many...

    Many Holes In Hull

Thanks OP for starting this thread and thanks Johnny for posting your repair. I have 5/16 holes similar to yours to patch. I may have some leftover raka 900 epoxy after finishing my transom laminate, could I use that for the patches? Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

    Overpowering a Vhull

My experience is actually underpowered v-hull but I am planning an overpower of my 1973 Starcraft Mariner 14. Max hp is 40 and I am putting a 50hp on it. I am re-enforcing the transom (had to rebuild it anyway) with a new plywood/epoxy/fiberglass laminate and two additional knee braces plus...

Help. 3 kids and wife seating

My first boat was a brand new 1988 Bluefin Sportsman 17ft aluminum hull fish and ski. Do a google search for images. The hull was rated at 85hp, mine had a 50hp Force which made it under powered. An 85hp would have been great. Anyways there was plenty seating and it was a fun boat. Have a look...

Compression Test Results-- 1971 Johnson 50hp

Awesome link crazyboat, thanks very much for that. I'll give it a good look over this evening when I have more time. Looks like it might have much more info than in my specific service manual for the motor. Do you think it is a safe bet the crank seals are leaking? Rings being good is one thing...

Compression Test Results-- 1971 Johnson 50hp

This is one ugly motor. Kinda looks like junk. I have run it a couple times on muffs, first when I bought the boat/motor combo and then back home and it seemed to have good pop and ran ok. But I could spin the flywheel by hand easily which I took to be a sign of low compression. Well I put the...

    Saw this Today.....

I was wondering about that but had brain-lock. Doh! Thanks, makes sense now. How did it end up in Texas we will never know I guess.

Wood Glue or Epoxy? Laminating Transom Plywood

Johnny how did you get the nice perfect 1/8 thick glass layer like that? Is that all filled with cloth that thick? Why did the epoxy not all squeeze out when you clamped it?
