Newbie Dilemma: Electric or Manual Downrigger? Need Your Expertise!

I've been using Vance's releases for quite awhile. I do own a Chamberlain but have never taken the time to learn how to use one. I don't use stackers as I have a hard enough time just driving the boat (tiller), managing one pole, and being the net b**ch for my fishing buddy. As far as stacking...

That happens to my stops also. Wish I could figure out a way to prevent that.

Newbie Dilemma: Electric or Manual Downrigger? Need Your Expertise!

I use 150lb and grab the line with Scotty's weight snubber: My downrigger boom is 24" and it's easy to grab onto the snubber. If I had a longer boom, I would go with a weight retriever. No hum with mine. I'm not so worried about the age of the braided but the wear on the last five or so feet of...

Newbie Dilemma: Electric or Manual Downrigger? Need Your Expertise!

To eliminate the hum I was getting from cable, I switched to braided on the one I use. I haven't used the new one enough to know if I will go that route. One thing though, you need to inspect braided for wear. I have empirical data to back that up: A few years ago, I was pre-fishing with a...

Newbie Dilemma: Electric or Manual Downrigger? Need Your Expertise!

When I got my 14' Gregor w/15hp Yamaha 4-stroke it came with a Scotty 1099 Depthpower electric. I purchased the equivalent manual Scotty 1080 Strongarm for my passenger. I've been using that same Depthpower for over 13 years and have had no problems. What's key for me, when your driving the boat...

    Taking Up the Slack?

The cross pieces are glued into the tees but the connecting ones running lengthwise, I put a little plumbers silicone grease to aid in taking it apart, then bundle up with ties when boat's not in storage. The tees on the gunnels take some trial and error to fit. I think I used 3/4 pipe and then...

    Taking Up the Slack?

No snow where I'm at but you could add more support down to the seats like the one at the front. The base I used came from the Walmart supports.

    Do any of you know?

When I stored my boat on a buddy's farm, I would get either rats or field mice. I looked for a product that wouldn't kill any farm cats or dogs if they happened to eat one that I had poisoned. I came across a product that worked really well at deterring them from moving in. Google "Fresh Cab...

    1962 18hp Evinrude- no spark

Years ago, my first boat came with a 1966 Evinrude 9.5hp Sportwin that had hard start issues. I removed the flywheel and replaced anything electrical including sparkplug wires and kill switch. For 15 years until I sold it, started first pull every time regardless of conditions.

Will Moeller fuel cap fit a Scepter tank?

What I need to do is find someone with a Scepter tank and try a test fit.

Will Moeller fuel cap fit a Scepter tank?

I currently have a six-gallon Moeller portable gas tank with a pre EPA cap. I like how it vents and have obtained two extra caps before they become obsolete. The tank is in the forward most bench seat in my 14" Gregor. It fits really tight and I've been using it this way for years. I'm thinking...

Fuel tank placement regarding motor and electrical

Douglasdzaster, your statement: "One of these post may be my last because my wife figured out how much I’m spending on the boat" reminded me of my favorite bumper sticker: "My greatest fear in life is that when I die, my wife will sell my boat and fishing tackle for what I told her I paid for it."

    New guy

About thirty years ago a group of high school buddies and our families started an annual trip to a five species trout lake. I was the only one without a boat. I bought a boat when the guy who's job I took over, retired, sold me his 14' Valco on an easy payment plan. So the second year while...

small/light starting battery options for engine/sonar/lights?

I've used a DieHard Gold U1R-2 (340 cold cranking amps/425 cranking amps at 32°F) lawn/garden battery for the last 12 years on my 14' Gregor/15hp 4-stroke Yamaha to power fish finder and downrigger with no problems and as I troll all day, the motor keeps it charged. Though it only got used for a...

    gunnel cracks

gogittum, I agree with your take on suspension. My trailer came from a previous boat and is homemade. I did rebuild it but kept the same leaf springs. Way to stiff. However I'm in the process of getting a new trailer.
