    Any Hams out there?

K4RAK in North Carolina. Not active right now but will be getting back on the air as soon as I get a new antenna built. Running 6M, 2M, 70 cm.

    1951 Elgin Rebuild

While at my Mom's house, I found a 1951 Elgin 2.5 hp outboard that my dad and I used to use when we rented a boat at Bull's Place in Swansboro in the late 50's through mid-60's. It has been sitting under a shed for at least 45 years but I figured, what the heck, I'd have a go at getting it...

    Small Celebrations ...

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to put my boat on the water for the first time tomorrow to see if I can break in the repairs and get rid of some of the smoke. I'm running a 50:1 mix according in accordance with Johnson's recommendations. I've read a lot a lot about SeaFoam but don't...

    Small Celebrations ...

This is just a bit of public celebration. A friend had a '69 Johnson 20 hp that had not been started for about 6 years, he had no boat, no use for the motor, and no inclination to mess with it, so he gave it to me. I have no experience rebuilding outboards but decided to jump in to see what I...

    Any Hams out there?

K4RAK here. Not real active but have an ICOM 6M, 2M, 70cm handheld and a few homebrew antennas. Also have an old Heathkit HW-8 QRP CW rig that hasn't been used in 30 years. Need to get that out, dust it off, and re-learn code.

    do you hate jet skis...???

Wihil ... can't remember the web site where I've seen it, but there is a guy who has an older 3-person JS that he has rigged for fishing at near-shore artificial reefs. Pretty sweet ride but I wouldn't trust a 20 mile outside trip to one motor.

    do you hate jet skis...???

Karma is a sweet, sweet b!^ch ... I launched my kayak at Fearington Point on B. Everett Jordan and started paddling out to a favorite fishing hole about a mile from the ramp. While paddling across a narrow body of the lake (about 100 yards), a JS'er kept running back and forth across my path...

    Transom Replacement

OK, that post was a bit screwed up. Someday soon, I'll learn how to post pictures correctly.

    Transom Replacement

It has been some time since I last posted about this topic. Since I am not teaching this summer, I finally have time to work on my boat and the first project has been to replace a rotten transom. I took everyone's advice and glued up two pieces of 1/2" plywood, cut it to match the old transom...

    Transom Replacement

Lots of good information in your posts. I've got the plywood and will take it to school tomorrow and fab it in the wood shop. I understand the reasons for using plywood and will be doing that but wonder about the possibility of using a solid transom. I have some beautiful quarter-sewn white...

    Transom Replacement

I'll definitely be using Gorilla glue. It is a bit of a mess to deal with initially but I know it will hold forever. I'll post some pix as I fab and install the new transom. Thanks for all the help.

    Transom Replacement

OK, it's been right at 6 months since I had a chance to play with my boat (that teaching job gets in the way) and I am back at it. I backed the boat into the garage today and ground/drilled out the rivets holding everything in place. Got the transom out and cleaned up the crud on the aluminum...

    Transom Replacement

This boat has the cap to the transom formed into the transom itself so it can't be removed. In other words, it is part of the transom. I checked with a neighbor who has an air impact wrench so I'm going to mod the end of one of the punches like someone else on this site has done. Now, I...

    Transom Replacement

I found (and consequently stole - price wise, that is) a nice MonArk 1448 Jon. The boat is in great condition except for the plywood transom panel. I need to replace it but can't figure out how to do that without removing and replacing a bunch of rivets. I'm looking for some advice here since...

    Purchasing old boat decals

There are several sources on the web. I just went out to find some reproductions for my MonArk 14 footer and found them at https://www.vinylapproach.com/replacementboatlogos.htm. I'm going to keep digging around for other sources.

Simple wiring questions for my first Mod!! Please help!

I agree with the idea of running grounds to a common bus bar rather than to a big knot of wires at the battery. I've seen many "interesting" wiring jobs done by guys who wanted to save a few bucks and ended up paying more to get straightened out. B. Landry is right-on with his advice to not...

My 14' Jon Mods So Far, But Looking For Help With The Rest

I found a nice little MonArk 1448 Jon that I want to mod and while looking for ideas came across your boat. I like the big light you have mounted on the front and wonder how it is powered. Is it 12 volt or are you using an inverter to get to 120 volts?

    Fiberglass on Aluminum

huntinfool ... Thanks for the info about fiberglass. I knew that the epoxy/glass interface was a chemical/mechanical bond but it never occured to me that sticking the stuff to aluminum was just sort of a glue job. I've 'glassed things over wood (like repairing a rudder on a friend's sailboat)...

    Fiberglass on Aluminum

Here's a pure ignorance question ... Will fiberglass stick to aluminum? I have gotten a 12' V-hull that has an aluminum keel that has worn through in places. I can't see replacing it but would like to repair it. I have some 4" wide fiberglass material and West System epoxy.

Describe the joy of fishing in one sentence...

In a quiet creek on a falling tide, shrimp jumping in the grassline running from the speckled trout that just hit my lure.
