I have a Mercury outboard- I am trying to remove the console to repaint the hull. How do I remove the steering cable from the steering wheel so I can pull the housing and cable through the hull?

I also need to replace the housing. Am I better off with a new steering kit? So far I have been unable to locate just a replacement housing.

Any help would be appreciated.

i just learned how to do mine i up graded from the old pullys and cable to the one large cable if thats what you have lookk behind the dash where the wheel goes through you should see a drift pin going through the steering wheel shaft pull rhe pin out and take off the lock washer should be 2 large nuts where the cable goes into the steering nuckel and one where the cable comes outremove both nuts and let them slide down the cable turn the wheel and this will back the cable out thats how mine worked any hope this helps
