I had the same issue earlier this year. Settled on a 1542. Pretty stable with my 215# ail walking around. raised from deck holds me without any tippy issues.

Raise the motor until the cav plate is 1" above the bottom. The cav plate should not run under water, it should just skim on the surface. Water running over the cav plate imparts a heck of a lot of drag. If your cav plate is 1" below the bottom, I'd wager the water you have a good bit of spray...

15' Modified V, me (215#), fishing gear and 200# more people, I get 28-29 with a 2 stroke 25 hp Yamaha. Good acceleration and throttle response. Me and gear alone I've seen 32. Don't underpower your boat. It'll suffer on performance and gas mileage. I can cruise @ around 22-24 mph and sip gas.

The 110 is the model denoting the 9.8. I had a 75 model for quite some time. Fast little motor. I wold push my old 14' (wery narrow and very light) flat to 30mph with my then skinny 110# butt in it.

Basically a lawnmower engine mated to a prop. I'd look for a decent used outboard. There are literally millions of evinrude, johnson, mercury motors in that hp range out there.

New or used? I'd seriously look into a 14' over the 12 unless you have space issues. The extra 2 feet is much appreciated. I have owned both sizes and recently went to 15'. $200.00 price difference is well worth it IMO.
