    Need repair advice

WOW! Thanks for all the tips and encouragement. I think i got it pretty good today. I put in on the ground under my lift with a couple of 2x4s supporting either side of the dent underneath. Then I put a 2x4 sticking straight up on the dent and lowered the leg of the lift down on it. I figure...

    Need repair advice

Hey folks. Some of you may have read about the tree branch denting my boat. I've settled with the insurance company and I basically got the boat for free now, I just need to fix the dent. After flipping it and putting some water in it I also found that there is a pinhole of a leak too. It drips...

Tree fell on my piece of tin!

Well, it looks like I got my wish. I'm getting a check for a little over a grand and I get to keep my piece of tin. I guess it's hammer time now! I'm going to beat it out as best I can and use it till it sinks. I'm glad, because I started the decking last year and I have 2 sheets of marine ply...

Tree fell on my piece of tin!

Here are some shots of the damage. I'll admit that it seemed worse at midnight in a windstorm, but it's still significant damage I think. I put the aluminum angle on there as a straight edge to show the deflection.

no more production on 2 stroke yamahas

Are modern 2 strokes as quiet as the 4s? That is one complaint I have about my older 18h merc is that it's fricken loud! That and the fuel consumption. I use much less gas on my Mercury 50 EFI on the pontoon boat than I do in the 18 on the jon. If I could find a gas sipping quiet 2 stroke I'll...

    What kind of plywood?

I'm not a professional boat builder, but I think it stands to reason that marine grade ply would be the best to use. It can be hard to find and a bit pricey, but seems like the natural solution. I've seen what happens to regular ply when exposed to water and it doesn't last long at all before it...

Tree fell on my piece of tin!

I'll snap some pics if I can today so y'all can see it. I'll be calling the ins. company tomorrow to see what they think. Ideal situation for me would be for them to give me a grand for it and let me keep it. I'll bang it back out and use it as a pond beater with just the electric motor and use...

Tree fell on my piece of tin!

Hey folks. I have a G3 1442 that got molested by a large branch. As many know, we in the northeast got HAMMERED by some fierce wind. We lost power for 2 days but many are still out. Anyway, my G3 was flipped on it's trailer for winter and an 8" branch came down stump first directly onto one of...

    thompsons vs epoxy

What about a good oil based paint? That's what I planned to use since it's cheap and is widely used outdoors. It seems to hold up pretty well. I figured 2 or 3 coats of that should seep into the wood pretty well and seal it up nicely. But, I don't see much of a mention on it around here. Is...

Chocolate milk in my lower unit.

That's great info.Thanks. Maybe I'll just do all 3 seals and forget about it. They look cheap enough and would give me some peace of mind. Thanks again!

Chocolate milk in my lower unit.

Hey fellas. I have a 80 something Mercury 18 and I love it. It really scoots my 1442 along. Anyway, when doing the yearly lower unit change this fall, the oil came out milky. I know that there are a few ways for water to enter the lower unit, but how do I tell which one has failed? I did an...

    Hinges for decking

those are the hinges I was trying to avoid but they really do seem to be the best fit for the application. i found some really nice fully hidden ones that are stainless but they are like 80 bucks each and you would need at least 2 per door. Not happening. So I guess it's gonna have to be...

    Hinges for decking

I was just wondering what folks are using for hinges for the doors in their decking. I'm about to start decking my 1442 and would like to use a hinge that is not visible from the top but I'm not sure what to use. A stainles piano hinge seems the easiest but the top of the hinge will be visible...

    Minn Kota Universal Sonar

Hey guys. I just scored what I think is my best craigslist score yet. A Minn Kota bow mount 55lb with Autopilot and Copilot. He said it also had "some thing to hook up to a fish finder". Basically saying it had Universal Sonar. How can I tell? I saw some pictures of ones online that had a...

    cover stains

In addition to my Jon boat I also have a pontoon. The issue I'm having is that when it's stored outside with the cover on, there are black streaks of oxidization that drip down from the snaps that hold the cover on. I imagine it's a pretty common issue. Its a real pain to get this off of my...
