Call this one " It was this big"

Got my son out fishing the other day. Sun was just breaking from the clouds as we were getting off the water. Boat is an old aluminum 1970;s that I redid with help from tinboats.net! Still going strong.

8lb line to small for bass?

In cold water here in WI, I find prespawn bass happily take slow-falling soft plastics. Last year I used a big grub on a light jighead to 'helicopter' down to them. Just cast it on the fish in 4 ft of water and the lure would start a big spiral down. It was so fun watching them take that...

Cautionary Words - Watch the weight of your mods...

So I built my boat out years ago. I used some heavy materials - 3/4" plywood for all the decking. a 2x12 for a stringer(?), etc. I fish with some 300lb+ guys and wanted everyone to feel comfortable. In the final setup I had 2 batteries (biggest I could find). One in the rear to start the...

    Found my Tinboats T shirt...

Was going out with a friend and happened upon my Tinboats Tshirt - so I wore it in hopes of a picture with a big fish. We were lucky and I hooked my longest smallmouth to date - 18 3/4". (I caught heavier/fatter this year though.) The picture doesn't do him justice. And for you oldschool...

    150 gills!

Went out on Friday morning alone - the family went to state fair instead of fishing -their loss. On the water at 6am started for bass. I soon noticed the fishfinder wouldn't stay on for long. Ran through the diagnostic screen and saw it was getting low voltage - immediately I realized I had...

See what my 11 year old made today.

My 11 year old daughter has been asking me to show her how to paint fishing lures. Today we went thru the basics of an airbrush and this is what she made all by herself. I think she shoud paint all my lures from now on. icUA7F4ucp8

    Built a cheap smoker

Last weekend between my kids 4 soccer games I built an UDS otherwise called an ugly drum smoker. I had an old soybean oil drum that I ground the lid off off. Then I drilled 4 3/4" holes in the bottom, 8 1/2" holes around the outside of the lid for air flow. This bit makes nice rounded holes...

    Grease seal install question

When doing my trailer bearings, I realized I made a mistake and seated the inner grease seals up to the inner bearing instead of leaving them flush with the hub. Should I take it all apart and redo the seals or do you think it will be ok for a year? Thanks for any ideas.

    Added fishfinder mount

Today I built a fishfinder mount for the front of the boat. I wanted something high enough that I could clearly see the screen while standing. With the old mount in the middle of the boat, I'd have to turn my body around to the side console while trolling for pan fish. I also wanted to scan...

    Crankbaits Poll

As I started painting more baits, I see there are literally hundreds of ways to paint a lure. The one that has me most confused is the standard crankbait. I hear pros talking about ticking rocks or logs 'like a fleeing crawdad" and I hear others say their favorite colors are "Sexy Shad" or...

Painted this for my 8 year old

My son's birthday is this Friday. On Monday I'm starting him off with this little present. I tried to make him a 'Spiderman' lure but one that would likely catch him a pike or bass. So I took my longest casting lure that has a history of catching fish - it's a topwater so he will SEE the...

    Fantasy fishing?

Anyone do fantasy fishing? I'm doing the bassmaster one and it's much easier now. They divide the fishermen into 5 groups and you get to pick one from each group. If there is enough interest we can do a tinboats group, but I must warn you that I have a jump on some guys - being in the top...

    Painted some lures today

Winter in Wisconsin can get pretty boring for a bass fisherman. While the lakes are sporting 12 inches of ice, I decided to go thru my fishing boxes. First I took an old spinnerbait and painted it my favorite rainy day colors. Today I took one of my many small cranks and made it match the...

    New-to-me reel

Picked this up off Craigslist today. It was $70 and the kid I bought it from only used it one summer. That's about the extent of my winter buying. It feels like I got a decent deal, but maybe these reels have issues?

    Phone plug

I got my galaxy note 2 (at&t) yesterday and I must say, I really, really like it. The huge screen (it's a handful) is great because I mostly surf and play games/music/videos on my tablet & old phone anyway. Now I have the two combined into one. I'm getting a case that has room for a license...

    Ranger aluminum boat.

Did anyone see the Wired2fish video of the Ranger Tournament series 18 ft aluminum boat? Supposed to be pretty nice, gave me some ideas of what to include on my next boat build. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddkyu_oD8CQ

    Taking back the Garage (mice)

As I was getting ready to put the boat away for the winter, I started cleaning the garage. The very first thing I noticed was a few mouse turds on a table. YUCK! I immediately recalled 20 posts on here about mice eating boat/engine wiring… that’s when I went on the warpath. Mice traps are...

    Deer camp

We went to the hunting shack yesterday. This is the first year my nephew is allowed to hunt. I snapped a few pictures of his dad getting him setup to shoot a few at the targets. He hit all bullseyes and absolutely destroyed an apple. One of these you can see his dad smiling that proud papa...
