After reading another thread about the likes and dislikes regarding Split grips, I'd figured I start a split grip thread myself. When I say addict, I mean it! Maybe someone could refer me to a split grip anonymous club, you know something like AA. :lol:
I purchased a Shimano Cumara and have beeen possessed ever since. I no longer own any rods w/full cork handles. At first I did it for more sensitivity as well as having more contact with the blank in order to feel the softer taps/bites. It has now become a must have for all my rods and anything else feels extremely awkward. So I bit down and crossed my fingers and attempted my 1st split grip mod with my Avid, being fully aware the warranty would be voided and cost me if I damaged the blank. At the time the Avid was the only rod I had w/a full cork handle and foregrip, or I would have tried it on a lower end rod first. Since then I've done a few of my friends for them, as well as removing the handle and for grip on a Premiere and my Shimano Swimbait rod. Glad I did!!!!!! The Premiere is like a totaly different rod and the weight has been dramatically reduced on the Crucial SB rod. I would like to stress; If it's not a St Coix your warranty will be voided! So here a few pic's of the progress and results.
As you see the more I did the better the results. On the Crucial SB rod I hand painted a Slammer Dark Trout on the foregrip prior to applying the finish coat of epoxy.

Very ballzy. I like it. All those rods look professionally modified. I think I would rather pay someone to do that for me though, because I would def. destroy my rods.

Thanks for the compliments gentleman! It's easier than you'd think. Shaking off the nerves for the 1st attempt and diving in is truely the hardest part. The higher end rods generally have more glue than the lower end rods. So the lower end ones are much easier, just wish someone told me that before I started the Avid! :lol: The Premiere went quite nicely, however the Crucial SB rod was a tough nut to crack. Tons of glue to remove which is the most dificult part of the proccess. There are many "how to links" online. I somewhat took a little from each one. Not cutting into the blank is your main concern. Any scratches in the blank can be touched up or paint the full exposed blank w/an Acrylic paint. Some choose not to paint the blank and just finish it w/Flex Coat lite, or even just a quick thin coat of fly tieing epoxy to protect the blank. I choose the paint route, and rather like the idea of being able to add a little bling. I was asking around for ruined or junk rods so I could make an amature video of the proccess. If anyone has one or even two laying around I'd be happy to put in a notelble mention in the video. :wink:

Tools needed;

Step #1) 2 oz shot of Jose Cuervo to steady the nerves :lol: Just Kidding!

Here's the link I used. Though I by passed the file step, and used sandpaper to round and shape the cork. 120, 220, 400 then 600 grit. I also wet sanded the balnk w/600 grit to remove any left over glue or blemishes prior to painting.
Also consider cork sealer to seal the cork after your finished. It works great and make it much easier to clean the cork.

While at this site checkout some of the marblizing design he does. =D> I'll be attemptenting that one next.

Also if you want to add bling rather than torture yourself as I did #-o trying to paint an emblem on the blank prior to applying the epoxy finish :

Hopefully I saved you from the many headaches I went though!

Nice job on your rod. I got the bug last year in the winter, I was very happy with the results as most of the rods I did the split grip treatment to were older semi-retired rods, that are now back in my regular rod lineup. Taking it slow is the best advice I can give to anyone trying this on their own rods.

Here's a link to some others I did
