After reading another thread about the likes and dislikes regarding Split grips, I'd figured I start a split grip thread myself. When I say addict, I mean it! Maybe someone could refer me to a split grip anonymous club, you know something like AA.
I purchased a Shimano Cumara and have beeen possessed ever since. I no longer own any rods w/full cork handles. At first I did it for more sensitivity as well as having more contact with the blank in order to feel the softer taps/bites. It has now become a must have for all my rods and anything else feels extremely awkward. So I bit down and crossed my fingers and attempted my 1st split grip mod with my Avid, being fully aware the warranty would be voided and cost me if I damaged the blank. At the time the Avid was the only rod I had w/a full cork handle and foregrip, or I would have tried it on a lower end rod first. Since then I've done a few of my friends for them, as well as removing the handle and for grip on a Premiere and my Shimano Swimbait rod. Glad I did!!!!!! The Premiere is like a totaly different rod and the weight has been dramatically reduced on the Crucial SB rod. I would like to stress; If it's not a St Coix your warranty will be voided! So here a few pic's of the progress and results.
As you see the more I did the better the results. On the Crucial SB rod I hand painted a Slammer Dark Trout on the foregrip prior to applying the finish coat of epoxy.
