Just got one today on the cheap. I have no idea how old it is and I'm not even sure where to find the serial number. The primary question I have is... How do I mix the oil & gas? Right now I have it at 32:1, but I've read some outboards use 40:1, 50:1, etc... So I'm really not sure. I didn't see anything on the motor itself that stated the ratio.

I ran it for a couple of minutes at 32:1 and didn't seem to have any problems. I just don't want to get it out on the water, hot dog it, and then get stranded out in the middle of the lake with nothing but a 12yr and a pair of ancient oars. :)

It Should be fine at 50:1 unless it is an early 60's model. Not positive about the Mercs, but the late 50's early 60's Evinrude/Johnsons did not have roller bearings in the wrist pins, so they used extra oil. I run 32:1 in my Evinrude 5.5, but it is a 56 model. Your best bet first is to find out how old she is. What did the previous owner run in it?

The following links should help you out in find the serial # as well as the year.
