A buddy of mine gave me a tracker 17 pro deep v today. He started to rebuild it and decided to just buy a new boat. All of the decking has been ripped out as well as the foam. I filled the boat with water and was thrilled to find that there were no leaking rivets. My first project is to replace the decking and add carpet. I am sure I will have many questions because I have never rebuild a boat before. My first question is how do you remove and replace the carpet along the top rails?

Welcome to da Bayou, Marriott

in my world, that is the best way to be gifted a boat !!!
then, you don't have to strip it yourself.
you can customize the plumbing and electrical the way "it should be".
then, after the decking is in place, you KNOW that everything is A-OK.
nothing worse than getting a boat where everything "looks okay"
only to be chasing gremlins and leaks forever.

good job !!

removing carpet ?? LOL just start ripping it out !!
stubborn areas can be coaxed along with lacquer thinner,
acetone, diesel fuel, etc....... just be careful and do SMALL
areas at a time until you find something that works for you.

Thanks for the response. It was great to be given the boat. He just happened to stop by my house on the way to the junk yard to scrap it. My wife said that it was a shame to just throw it away and 10 minuets later it was sitting in my back yard. I have a few more questions (I have never owned a boat before) Do you know here I can get pictures of what the front deck of the boat looked like before it was taken apart? I have the aluminum pieces but none of the decking that it was connected to. Also my local Home Depot has BCX plywood on clearance for under $ 15.00 a sheet. Would that be a good choice to replace my decking with? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

1/2 inch. I plan on replacing the foam which will help support the deck so I thought that 1/2 inch would be OK. Went back today and it is now 9 bucks a sheet. At that price I could double it up if 1/2 inch is not good enough.

1/2" is good unless you are a bigger guy. I have 1/2" deck and I weigh 210.

Wait! I think I might have found some interior pics that look like they might be close to your year/model. It's a 1995 Pro Deep V 17.

Hope these help.

The outboard is a 1994. The title was lost so I am waiting for the replacement. Those photos look exactly like my boat. Thank you!

In some of the photos the carpet covered panels look like the edges were rounded over. Is that common or is the carpet used to soften the edges of the plywood? Thanks again for everyone's help.

I think I'd round-over the edges. Those square edges would work thier way through your carpet in a short time.
BTW, as a reminder, you don't plan on using pressure treated plywood, do you?

Roger

No I know about the chemical reaction between aluminum and PT wood from reading other post on these boards. I am leaning towards using BCX plywood.
