I have an 85 merc 9.8 2stroke and was wondering if there is any way to retrofit a safety kill switch and lanyard to this motor? Are there any kits availible, has anyone done this, how difficult?

Not a big deal.Just wires into your stop button. Here's one I saw on E-Bay.Do a search, outboard kill switch & you might find one cheaper.
The only other thing you need to know is your kill button normaly open or closed.

Here the switch I used on my '71 'Rude, Sierra Model SIE-MP40970; I bought it from SeaWay Marine as part of my parts buy, it was $23 through them.

Sierfra Kill Switch

It doesn't matter if your is NO or NC, this one will work.

This is a website that tell you how to install a universal kill switch. It doesn't matter the brand of motor, the concept is very similar. Good luck!!
