92 johnson 15hp no start

1992 johnson 15hp (en15renm)...pull start tiller .cannot get it started.has not been run in about 5 years. pulls fine with plugs out.pulls short with plugs in. appears to be getting fuel as the the plugs are wet.
what is the easiest way to check spark on one of these. kinda hard to hold the plug up against the head to check for spark when you're pulling it from the other side.
any ideas are appreciated.

I have leads with alligator clips on each end that I ground the plugs with to check for a basic spark to see if a motor will fire, but a real deal spark checker is what you need to see if your spark is hot enough.

That engine had a kill switch on it that either needs the lanyard or the dummy piece to de-activate the kill switch. Is yours there and in place?
Will be surprised if the carb does not need to be serviced.
