Unhook your trolling motor though or at least the Xi5 states too in the manual. Don't know about others.

Minn Kota recommends the same on their electric steer motors

Yikes! I have never disconnected my Powerdrive motor while charging.
 
I placed a relay (that is rated for the load) on my PowerDrive that is switched at the console. It works perfectly, and I don't have to worry about the residual power draw over long periods of time.
