Yikes! I have never disconnected my Powerdrive motor while charging.

I placed a relay (that is rated for the load) on my PowerDrive that is switched at the console. It works perfectly, and I don't have to worry about the residual power draw over long periods of time.

the only thing I unplug while charging is the trolling motor and that is done as soon as I take it out of the water.

Yeah, I would unplug the trolling motor.
