I am looking at a 1989 Mercury 25 HP for likely a good deal. He said the only thing that is wrong with it is a bent prop shaft. What does that mean? As I am a beginner - what is the best and worst case scenario? Both in terms of time, difficulty in fixing, and cost? I was just wondering if it's even worth my time to go see this thing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bent prop shaft can cause an imbalance that will damage bearings. Also, you will very likely have seal leaks as well. To fix it, you will probably need a propshaft, both bearings, and all propshaft seals. Repair involves complete disassembling of the gearcase, in order to replace these.

That's all I needed to hear, and I'll pass, thanks!

I learned a valuable lesson on my first outboard (96 Merc) with a similar problem. Had a difficult time finding a shop that would touch mine...said it was too old. Last year, it seemed 98 was the cutoff. Would have done it myself, but gotta have that special Mercury tool ($$$) to get the bearing carrier out. #-o

Oh well, the motor was in like new condition and free...so I guess I still came out ok on it.

I guess im very fortunate, my shop (Vans) will take any outboard and can get parts for any too at a decent price.
