KMixson » 20 minutes ago[/url]"]Question? What happens when you stick your hand down some hole and a alligator snapping turtle or an alligator for that matter clamps down on your fingers? What then?

I would wonder where the hell either came from since I'm in south-central Virginia.

RiverBottomOutdoors,

Fyi, I caught a over 50# snapping turtle at FT PICKETT, VA on a trotline in 1989. - I suspect that she wasn't the only BIG snapper in Southside.
(Ft Pickett, incidentally, has 2 lakes that are LOADED with catfish, bass & crappie AND a large pond that is stocked with rainbow trout. - Unless post policies have changed a whole bunch, "asking to fish" on the post's lakes is all that is necessary to get permission.)

Note: Only OB of less than 10HP are OK there. - I bought a 9.9 for precisely that reason.

yours, satx

Nice but I wouldn't be fumbling around no Oklahoma waters like that. I know some people that do and they're crazy!

50! That is a whooper! I wonder how old a 50 would be? I bet hundred years old at least. I've set lines and jugs for snappers a few times. 26 is the biggest I've ever caught. Good eating, just a pain to clean.

RiverBottomOutdoors,

I guess that you can call the VA State Aquarium in Virginia Beach & ask how old that she is. = A VA Game Warden asked me that afternoon what I planned to do with her & I just "shrugged". - He then asked me if he could give her to the aquarium, I said, "YEP" & he took her with him.

Fwiw, The Texas State Aquarium at Fair Park in Dallas has an Alligator Snapping Turtle that has been there since 1955, when I first saw him on a school field trip. - He weighs well over 100 pounds.
(Btw, unless the BIG turtle has been "sold" again, he actually belongs to a Dallas OB-GYN, named Nix.)

Note: To help support the aquarium at Fair Park, they sell the fish/reptiles/animals to people/clubs/businesses/schools/etc. = That way the aquarium gets $$$$$$, gets to acquire more critters & the "owner" gets to deduct the cost of the creature, food, care & maintenance from their taxes, if the wish.
Should you visit the TSA, look for the "ownership plaque" that identifies the "owner".
(Our family owns a BEAUTIFUL & quite large female Lion-fish there & Mother "gets a bill" each year for her expenses/upkeep.)

yours, satx
