How far can a gas can be from the motor?

I have a freshly rebuilt Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin with a new fuel pump. I need to put the fuel tank about 8 ft away from the motor and I'm wondering if this is too far for the fuel pump to suck? An thoughts on this? Thanks!

My tank is about 12' from my motor. My motor is a '83 25hp mariner, I'm using 3/8" fuel line.
