Hello everyone.... I am new to this site but not new to forums....
I wanted to show you all my boat that I got from my grandfather
He built this boat in 1981 I remember fishing on this boat as a youngster
of 11 there has been nothing done to this boat since I picked it up.
The boat has been Garage kept all this time and only seen maybe
5 yrs of use in total.
The motor is a Great running Short shaft Johnson 33
I have the ID tag.... if someone knows how to break it down and tell
me what it means that would be appreciative.
I think its a 1978 but I am not sure as for what MODEL..... I know the length is
16ft the floor is 50 inches I think the top is 70 inches.
The Trailer is CUSTOM MADE... he made this his self...!!!!!
Please comment .....
I am planning this winter to Completly Go through the boat..
NEW PAINT, ( trailer, boat ) NEW CARPET, and a reconstruction of the interior...
I am going to do different Layout...... going to use a Side Console made for the boat.
NEW MOTOR as well.. I want a bigger one.... thinking about a 50 or 55 something along
those lines.. JOHNSON or EVINRUDE
could someone tell me what motor its rated for?
THANKS GUYS...

I would like to know the hp rating for sure.

The tag reads

acbf4876m78f

Year 1978
Model 4876

what does the M stand for ?
and what about the acbf ?

Its a 1978 Alumicraft 1650.

The first three characters are the manufactuer. ACB=Alumicraft Boat Company. The next five are the hulls serial number. The last four are the date the hull was certified. M78F=Jan 1978.

Your model is determined by the length and the floor width. Based on your first post its a 1650.

This is only a Hull Identification Number (HIN). Your HP rating and weight rating and what not are on a metal tag that is on or near the transom inside the boat. Its not uncommon for those to be missing or be unreadable.

Agreed, my Alumacraft also starts with "ACBF" ends in "293" which is Feb of 1993. There is 4 numbers and one letter inbetween. Example; ACBF 2222 A 293

thanks alot guys.. I have learned alot ....
Now can I figure out what the hp rating is?
I have looked every were for a tag or sticker..
the only sticker left is the one over the tag on the outside
of the hull... and that one is not readable...
maybe someone will tell me what their 1650 is rated at....
Thanks for helping me learn how to read the tag.

Currently all Alumacraft boats over 14' are Mod-V and yours doesn't appear to be one. Assuming your dimensions are correct and Alumacraft no longer makes that model, here are some specs that might help you figure it out.

1650 mod-v all-weld with side console is rated at 70hp
1650 mod-v all-weld with tiller is rated for 60hp
1648 mod-v riveted with tiller is rated for 35hp

Generally the specs for different boat manufacturers are more or less the same based on size, tiller or console, etc. If yours is welded and a 1650 it looks like you can put at least a 60hp on it. That ought to get it moving along. Once you get the old decks off you may find the original plate in there someplace. You're off to a good start with the boat. Make sure to post pics as you go along. We are just as interested in the tear down as the build up.

WOW thats some GOOD info that I was looking for..
I am very optamistic... but tell me PLEASE......
how do I know its the WELDED version that you
speak of?
what should I look for?

as far as the rebuild of the interior.. I WILL make a build post
prolly a new thread.

Just look at the seams. Riveted is full of rivets at the seats, seams, ribs, everything. The welded ones show visible welds at the joints and points of attachment. Is your bow straight across or in a "V"? I couldn't really tell from the photo. It looked like a regular jon vs. a mod-v. I wouldn't be surprised if you come across the capacity label somewhere under the deck in the back.

From the side picture it appears to be riveted but its hard to tell honestly. Either way it looks like a great boat!

sorry.
the frt is FLAT....
and I believe that all the seams are riveted...
so its not as high rated as I would have liked
for it to have been...
I have not found the ID tag for the MOTOR..
I cleaned and looked all around for that too... but
no such luck....
I am leaning towards putting on a motor say
a JOHNSON 40 or 50......

Why? A 35 should make that thing scoot along pretty nicely. Those boats were built before guys really tried to make them fly. The hull dynamics aren't that great.

Personally I'd enjoy it as is. replace the carpet and enjoy the nostalgia.

Ditto. Motor you have is plenty.

I agree with the others but think the boat could easily handle a 40hp. I had a 1977 Monarck 1648 that was set up alot like that one and it had a Johnson 55hp. The motor was a 77 also so it probably wasnt pushing but about 40 hp at the time. I imagine you could get ahold of a newer 40hp that would be around the same weight as that old 33hp. My opinion is that you can never have too much motor, front or back. That is as long as the boat itself can handle the weight.

GUYS...
thanks for the reply's
I took the boat out yesturday morning.. thas why I am just
now getting back with you all.... ( good times ) I did a little fishing
and then some testing o the motor its self... I wanted to make sure she
was running right... well the fishing went rather well... ( lol ) see pic.
and so did some testing.. The GPS says I was going steady 16mph
thas not good enough for me.. that SUCKS to me.....so I tested a few things
I have the motor adjusted out on the farthest hole ( 4th one out ) and that
seems to be the best ..... I know the motor is running on both cylinders....
and I know that its getting enough fuel to the carb... while running WOT
I sprayed Carb cleaner ( small amount ) to the direction of the carb and
the motor BOGGED instantly... so its getting adaquate fuel.
I did change the sparkplugs while out on the lake.. and I did get better results...
I now get a ROCK STEADY 17mph.... thas my and my wife and fishing gear in
the boat... ( loaded down )
so anyone have any other thougts....
mine are ( get another prop ) if not to expensive...
and then a BIGGER MOTOR.. lmao... I have the chance to get
a johnson 55 but its a long shaft... and I need a short one.
so that means possibly adding a JACK PLATE to the rear of the boat to
raise the motor ... and actually that might not be a bad idea....if I go that
route.. I will get an electric one were I can tilt and raise... for max adjustability.
for adding the extra weight I will then add those Aluminum boxes to the rear
of the boat for more boyancy.
any more thoughts?

Looks like dinner...

Go weigh the boat. I bet it's water logged wooden structure is weighing you down pretty bad. at 17mph did it plane out?

Jamie

If your boat is riveted the max hp for it is probably 35hp. I just checked four manufacturers and every one of them rated their 1648 boats at 35hp. You should probably not exceed that horse power. Jamie's probably right about the water-logged structure inside the boat. Maybe before you get another motor you should gut the boat and then see what mph you get. I was out yesterday with my 1448 with 25 hp motor and was going 30+. A 35 on your boat should get it going pretty well so it must be some other problem. Is the motor the correct height - the cavitation plate should be more or less even with the bottom of the boat. You might spend a little more time with the trim to be sure it's set at the best location. Be careful if you exceed the recommended hp. Flying along might be cool until the boat goes airborne.

I will have to agree I do need to GUT and redo..
I want to so badly.. but I like to fish too.. lol
so I guess that will be a winter project..
I have been rounding up parts already...
so when I do get started.. it will be like X-mas... lol
I do believe that the wood is prolly soaked
I will not go back with Wood for the floor...
I will go Aluminum...and I will try to make
everything that I can... Aluminum.... I can tig I have the
equipment. I am very excited to Update this boat.....
I have been doing alot of Cat fishing lately..
and I am hooked... so I will be adding a LIVE WELL..
I have a plan.... I just cant wait to get started.
Thanks alot guys... for all your comments.
I contacted Alumacraft... Via E-mail... took 2 days but
they got back with me... He says that my boat is a
1648.... so I guess I measured wrong?
ohhhh well... he gave me some measurements
I was looking for.. and he is going to get back with me
with rating of the boat... ( I am still waiting ) lol
I asked him if there was anyway I could get a factory
sticker... for my boat for the rating....
WE WILL SEE....... lol

Hey everyone....
I have been real busy working on the boat.. ( pics are going to be posted )
I figured it was heavy due to the wood rottin...
My thoughts were I better clean the bottom of the boat first before
WINTER gets here....so I have started just that... in the mean time I took someones
advice and contacted Alumacraft and this is what was said...

Ron,

I do not have any of the drawings or actual specs any longer for your model of boat. What are you calling the side pod? I am not familiar with that term! And yes a 50 h.p is all that your boat would rate for with steering.

Thanks again!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So thats got me looking for a 50 hp or even a 40
so I have started the process of cleaning the bottom of the boat.
I took some pics of the bottom and how bad it was
then I started taking pics of the process of me lifting the boat.

and I have a question... everyone has seen pics of my boat...
in your mind... ( This should be a Pole ) what should my boat weigh....
and what do you think it weighs in at?
I will have that answere prolly tonight.... I am posting these now before
I go work on the boat more I still have to put it back on the trailer.

Something I have noticed about adding pictures to this website..
you have to think about what pictures you want to show first cause
its backwards for some reason...
USUALLY.. when you post a pic that picture is at the top then so on
and so forth...
I dont know I didnt know this when I posted these multi pics..
so you have to start from the bottom and then work your way to the
top....
SEEMS to me that it should be the other way around.
just my 2 cents
