My suggestion for not wanting to scratch the seats would be to make a plywood box and carpet that, which would just fit over and sit on the seat. similar to what you did in the bow. I guess im very fortunate, my shop (Vans) will take any outboard and can get parts for any too at a decent price.

Dont Wd-40 it. Just a little grease on the splines. it should go right in if its lined up no mallet should be necessary. make sure its not in a crevice of the block and in the actual shaft. If needed look with a flashlight.
