While most of my friends are locked inside hiding from the cold here in Ohio, I've been taking my kayak out in the 30degree weather to chase some winter fish down. I've been hitting the Ohio River lately, targeting white bass and hybrids using blade baits and vertical jigs with pretty good success. The bite was awesome up until mid-December, but then as the water dipped below 40degrees, it has gotten a little bit more challenging to find the bigger fish. I had a great day out there Monday and Tuesday, though, landing over 30 white bass, 5 gar, 2 drum, and a few slimy carp. Most fish were taken in 15-20fow on 1/2ounce or 3/4ounce silver blade baits. My favorite lure being a Heddon Sonar in silver/blue. Most of the white bass were in the 1-2 pound range, and one of the gar was 12 pounds. Great fun for this early in the year.
