A few months ago my friend and I bought a 16 foot aluminum V-bottom and trailer. The carpet and decking were rotting, boat filled with mud, a real junker. Since it was too cold to take her out for a test run, and we didn't have a motor, restorations began. This was our first boat, an upgrade from the kayak we'd been using to bowfish the creek with. Supplies were scarce, ideas were primitive, but it was a fun stepping stone to what we have now. Soon after purchasing the boat I got a good deal on a "ran last time it was used" 12 hp 1968 Buccaneer that we tuned up to working condition.

This is the first boat/vehicle that I've gotten in my name, so I was a little new to the game and got scammed by some guy... Couldn't get the boat titled and after getting pulled over by the Park Ranger for the first time, we decided to look into other options. We wanted something that would be easy to register and that didn't need a lot of work to run well, so we sold the outboard for $50 profit, the boat and trailer for $100 profit, cruised over to the Bass Pro and picked up a brand new 12 foot Tracker and a 7.5 hp Mercury and trailer off craigslist. The 12 footer ate up the creek with one person, did ok with 2-3, but could hardly make it back up the 2/10 mile river pass to the boat ramp, and was unstable when standing on the "casting deck".

We decided that we need a bigger boat. Yesterday we went to my friends co-worker's house who just happened to have a 16 foot, 40 hp, steering console jon boat and trailer that he was looking to downsize to something he could take in the ponds. We traded on the spot and are heading over to pick it up today.

We took the new boat out yesterday despite the rain (actually cleared up as soon as we got moving). Took a few tries to start the motor but it ran strong. I had it WOT for about 10 minutes and something in the console started beeping. We couldn't figure out what it was but it stopped when I backed off the throttle a bit. I don't know much about this motor...it's a 1995 Mariner Magnum, 40 HP, 4 stroke, ID# 0G299223. With our old motor we had to run the engine dry after each use, is that also the case with this motor? I'm not sure if it is fuel injected or carb. How full should the oil be? Any advice would be appreciated.

hay i dont think that is a four stroke but a oil injected 2 stroke judging but the pic of the engine were the cover is off. so that alarm could be low fuel oil or hi temp alarm. if it is a high temp alarm you should replace the impeller for the cooling system it should only take a little bit to do but would most likely fix you problem if it is a high temp alarm. if its a low oil alarm (which i doubt because it turned off when you backed off the throttle a bit) just add oil.

just a little tip for you , I am not very familliar with mariner but , I know alot of guys that don't use the oil injection. They just mix the gas and oil in the gas tank. It is peace of mind knowing the oil is in the gas and if injection pump quits for some reason , you know what i mean.

Most likely the alarm was a high temp alarm. Replace the impeller and check the water pump. Also NEVER run the engine dry unless you want to get very good at replacing the impeller. Running it dry will shred the impeller in as little as a few seconds depending on how dry thye rubber is.

Hey there, dude awesome trade! My brothers boat is a 94 and it beeps when he has to add oil to the injector. You should replace the impeller anyway if you can. Is it shooting water out at a good pace? I check mine every time I go out because Im having to use a 1964 johnson! Plus I check if the water is cool or hot. Good luck!
