Need some help identifying a motor I found on Craigslist and seeing if it’s worth the trouble. The guy doesn’t know year or anything or whether it even runs. He only wants 200 for it. I included a picture to see if anyone knows the year at least.

Looks like a 1960 40hp. Actually looks like it may also be a 1959 35hp. If you can get a model number I can tell you exactly what it is. The number will be located on a large plate located just below the front of the lower cowling and between the stern brackets.
Very simple engine and bulletproof.
Whether or not it is worth the trouble is up to you.
If that engine were near me and it was not locked up I would be all over it but I have the knowledge and capability to bring it back into service very easily. Your experience and knowledge may dictate otherwise.

Oh man what a beautiful motor when she’s cleaned up. I posted a few more pictures to maybe help. He also says it’s tiller driven which the pictures don’t make it look that way. If it’s not how hard would it be to make that conversion.

It's not a tiller motor. But you can put older omc big tiller parts on it... I have them on a 59 and a 58.

It isn't a tiller motor, but the motor beside it in the first pic of your second post is.

Stinky,
It appears that you are pretty green when it comes to outboards. Don't think that you can just clean this motor up and start using it. It will require a significant investment in time and money to get it back into reliable service. If you have any doubts about your abilities to do that we don't want to steer you wrong or encourage you to think it's going to be easy. Like Pappy said it depends on you and your skills and commitment level.
