a friend of mine has a mercury 30HP stick steer...he wants 1000 dollars for it..it is 4 stroke and it looks and runs good...but for my boat will i need a long shaft or short shaft...also can the stick steer work with a tiller handle instead

You need to measure your transom. If it is 15 inches, it is short shaft. If 20, it is long shaft (we are talking approximate numbers here). You will have to buy a tiller for that motor to make it work as a tiller, and not a stick steer. Finding tillers is tough, so even if I did like Mercury's, that would probably be a deal breaker for me. That isn't a great deal, but it isn't a bad one either. About reasonable, and were I looking for one, I would definitely consider one at that price.
