So, I just "won" an older Evinrude on the 'Bay, and was wondering if the Experts on here could give me their honest opinion(s) of it. Listing states it's from the mid-sixties, but looks to be in remarkably good shape. It's a 3 horse, which I'm hoping will be enough for my ten foot Jon, and I paid $129.00. Oh, and the model # is 3403C.

According to MarineEngine.com, https://www.marineengine.com/parts/model_guide_pre80.html, your engine was made in 1964.

It appears to be an Evinrude Lightwin. Here's a link to the 1964 Evinrude catalog:

You ain't going to win any races, but it should move you a a reasonable clip. My guess is about 5 mph. I don't have a clue how old you are, and given that, I would wager that the motor would easily outlive you, or me, and I am 15.

Does it run? If so, a standard price for a running one of those is 125 - 150. Unknown condition is probably 75 or 90. Even if it isn't running, it shouldn't take much to get it running. They strove for simplicity with these things, which is why they are a) so reliable, b) will last forever, and c) are so easy to repair in the event that something does break.

Haven't checked the numbers, but the colors look right for a '64. The official oil mix ratio for Johnson/Evinrude from 1964 until current is 50:1, but myself and many others who mess with these a lot feel that they need a little more oil due to the bronze sleeve bearings. I would recommend 40:1 with this motor. Regular 87 octane fuel, and regular Pennzoil or Supertech marine 2 stroke oil will be fine. Run Pennzoil premium plus if you really feel like it, but I wouldn't bother unless I got it on sale.

Throw it in a tank, put fresh gas/oil in it, and see if it cranks.

Well, certainly not looking to race, let alone win. Just wanted something to get me along so I don't kill the battery trolling along everywhere. And for as much as I'll use the boat, I couldn't justify anything more. If I could, I'd have a bigger boat.

Thanks,
