New member here first thread. I just bought a 1985 basstracker with a 40 evinrude.

Today I brought it to the river to run. It ran real good in forward but when I put it in reverse it started making a grinding sound and vibration coming from the control lever. Any idea what could cause this to happen in just reverse and not forward?

Update I messed with it some more today.

I disconnected the control cables to make sure it wasn't them. I shift it in to forward manually and stays in gear and idles fine. When I put it in reverse manually as soon as I let go of the shift lever it jumps out of reverse. The only way it will stay in reverse is if I hold it in gear.

Any ideas what I should check next?

Read the thread by Base ball guy on his motor jumping out of gear. He had to replace the clutch dog and a gear but could just be an adjustment of the shift rod.
