Im fixin to change the lower unit oil on my 15hp Evinrude. I was wondering if there is any at all difference in 80w90 boat lube versus 80w90 gear oil thats used in the auto industry? Ive already got a couple bottles of auto gear oil just wondering if its bad to use. Thanks,Brian

No difference. Now, I wouldn't use it in an engine under warranty, as they will look for any and every excuse to blame you, but if your engine is out of warranty, it will work just fine.

Both Gear lubes conform to the exact same standards (API GL-5), and are identical in composition.

Thanks bassboy. Im puttin in a new water pump this week and will change oil to. Thanks,Brian.

I concur with bass boy - just make sure the old oil is water free

If it is milky there is water in it - you need to fix that leak!

Good luck

GL 5 oil is a higher level in properties for use where water might get in. I find myself replaceing the WP and reseal the lower unit when I get a new(to me) motor. I have caught many problems before they got expensive.
