Hi, I'm new to the site and must say what a great source of information it is. I have a question about painting an aluminum boat. I understand the prep work and how self etching primer must be used, but do I have to use marine paint or is there a less exspensive alternative. The boat will only be used in fresh water and only be in the water when I'm using it. Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome Kenny, no Marine paint needed if you dont want to, Parker duck boat paints from Cabelas are inexpensive, even rustoleum paint work, its the prep that is important, use the search option above to check all paint threads, good luck.

Unfortunatly I haven't had it in the water yet, but I painted mine with a marine paint Rustoleum makes that is very reasonably priced. Went on nicely with a spray gun, and looks fantastic.
