I only have a 15hp motor but sometimes when going from wide open to idle I get a little water coming into the boat. It also happens on the really windy days. I was just wondering if anyone with a small tin has attempted this. I have an idea of how I can do it, but I was just wondering if anyone had some pictures of their finished product.

Bonus, I did pretty good the other day on a small lake near by. 7 1 pounders, and a 4.38 pounder!

I would guess a set of splashguards would do the job? Several versions are available, and they should be pretty simple to DIY as well.

Here are a few:

yea those are splash guards, I was going for the more clean look of a splash well.

Put some weight up front or add a small set of trim tabs or whale tail to the motor will result in the boat coming off plane flatter. It sounds like your boat is falling off the wave it makes when it's planed out. Going straight to idle makes the prop act like a brake as well. A whale tail on the motor will make it plane out quicker and flatter as well.

You shouldn't 'need' a splash well on that hull.

Correction to my previous post and sorry for the mini hijacking. My EX-Gregor which is now being enjoyed by a new owner as of this morning.

My Dad has one of those "whale tails" on his 17' targa deep v. Do these things actually work? I only have a 15hp mercury, I don't mind if it drops my speed 1-2 mph, I just would like to plane out when I add a couple hundred pounds. I'm going to have to figure out the weight distribution.

Yeah, the principle is they are pushing the CG forward by lifting the rear. I built one for my 17' Sunbird when I got it out of 3/16" aluminum and it worked wonders for popping up on plane within 2 boat lengths. Before the nose would go way up for 3-4 lengths and then settle. Coming off plain was similar, the boat felt like it fell into a hole stern first. After the foil it settled smoothly. After putting pods on my jet boat it performs the same.

Just make it a couple inches wider and a couple inches longer than the prop. This one was 4" wider on each side and 8" longer and I didn't lose any performance.
