Installing/adding a Tunnel

I've been looking for something like an Alumacraft 1756 with tunnel and sponsons, but I'm not having much luck on the used market. The few I've found are gone quickly. I know a tunnel can be added by a good welder, what I don't know is about the reliability of such. Would buying a regular 1756 and having a tunnel and sponsons added later be something to avoid or is that not such a bad idea?

I think I would buy a tunnel instead of adding it. The tunnel needs to be designed properly to "pack" the water around the prop.
