My nephew picked up a MinKota power drive bow mount trolling motor without the
the foot pedal assy.
Do any of You know if there is a way to check the motor with out the controller?
There are controllers available on ebay, but we want to know if the motor is any
good before spending the money.
The unit was made in year 2000.
Thanks for any help.

Open the cover over the circuit board. Disconnect the leads to the main motor and to the steering motor. Apply 12V to both sets of leads individually. If the motors turn, they're good. I'd say your chances that it's a problem with the controller are very good.

I did the same thing with a PD V1 that I bought cheap. Both motors were good and the controller was bad. I ended up replacing the controller with a PD V2 board and added the I-Pilot at the same time. There was a pretty good write-up on one of the other sites about replacing a V1 controller with a V2 board, but I didn't save the link. I do remember that there was a little bit of modification required, but it wasn't significant. Only big difference was a new foot pedal was needed, but the I-pilot took care of that.
