I'm fishing for some practical, experienced advice. I've settled on a hull that meets my needs, a '70s - '80s alum Starcraft 18 ft open bow, probably an SS model. I expect a full rebuild. Not concerned with that, mechanical, aluminum experience & tools I have. I have little experience with marine engines, pros and cons. I'm leaning toward a 4 or 6 cyl i/o over an OB. Noise is an issue for me, hearing is shot! Plus the i/o seems pretty simple & reliable to me. However I'm just smart enough to know and old enough to admit when I should ask advice. What ever side you're on give it to me straight, I asked! Especially the ones to stay away from.

IB draw a lot more water than an OB. A 4 stroke OB would be quieter that a 2 stroke and be better on fuel. my .02

I will relay a few things:

outboard
easy to winterize
do not take up space IN the boat
all parts are marine parts and expensive
have to add oil to fuel (2 cycle only)
lighter weight

inboard/outboard
reliable 4 cycle, simpler to work on for someone with car experience
take up a lot of space in boat, heavy engine but well balanced in boat
still have lower unit to deal with
harder to winterize, some are hard to change oil on and drain coolant
