Being post # 3000, I figured I'd make it a good one.

About a year ago, I told myself I would make an effort to throw the swimbait as much as I could stand it. At first, it was extremely difficult. I kept telling myself "This bait is so **** big, I know if I put on a trickworm, I'll catch a fish here." And many times.... I would, so I'm not so engrossed with the swimbait that I won't try something different if I can't get them to bite it; however, I've also realized that by targeting fish that will bite the swimbait, I've caught fish I otherwise wouldn't.

As I began to learn a bit more about how to fish the swimbait, I gained confidence in throwing it with the payoff being a "better than average" size fish even though the bites didn't come as frequently. Earlier this year, I started fishing with a club again and found myself rarely picking up the swimbait and reverting back to my "numbers" techniques, so I really haven't fished it as much as I had hoped this year. I fished an average of 3 times per month this year (way too little  ) and most of those were tournaments. With what remained, I spent most of that time with either a jig or a swimbait and really tried to hone my skills with each, at least as best I could with only a dozen or so "fun fishing" trips.

That said, if I decide not to fish tourneys next year, I'd really like to sell 90% of my tackle and invest it into a few quality swimbait setups. I have grown content with only getting a few bites a day with the swimbait, because the bite is so good and the quality of fish is better. I still haven't caught a monster (over 10lbs), and I've caught plenty of small fish too. But my average 5 swimbait fish will almost always be at, or above, 15lbs (which for me is about 3-5# better average than my tourney results). As I grow older, I've embraced becoming more content with less bites, in return for a bigger size average.

Before really throwing swimbaits, I was advised on another forum to chose a lure and stick with it, and learn it as best you can. Naturally, there is more to it than that, but this bit of advice has had more impact on my mindset in throwing them than all others. I latched on to one lure, and for the most part throw it 90% of the time I throw a swimbait. I know it's not always the best choice, but it has forced me to learn to fish it different ways and under different conditions. That said, I would advise anyone contemplating the technique to do the same. I'm not always good at posting my fishing reports, so I thought I'd just throw up some of the swimbait fish I've caught and share what I've learned thus far.

if im not draggin what ever i may be useing across the ground im not catching fish lol some time ill get them on the fall but thats about it i got a crappie on a rattle trap one time i guess but i try different baits all the time never have any luck and end up switching back to plastics / jigs do really well with them tho

Nice fish you got there TOO!!!

I added another one over the weekend on the swimbait. I had a 3# and 7# hooked on the same swimbait but of course..... the 7 came unbuttoned at the boat.

Water temp was 56 degrees, and I'm afraid the swimbait bite is about done for the year. It seems that most of the bites will be subsurface now. Here is the 3# from yesterday.

Thanks nick, I know what you mean about plastics. It's hard to dispute their effectiveness when you're fishing where there are fish. However, you'll find that the moving baits are much better for effectively locating active fish. Lipless cranks are an undesputed fish-catcher. Keep one tied on, in a color that is the primary forage in the lakes you fish, and use it as your primary search bait and you'll get more confidence using it. As gets said alot about cranking type baits, vary the presentation until you find out what the fish want. Typically with plastics, it's simply let it fall to the bottom and move it. If you're just casting and winding a moving bait, you're probably missing fish.

Good report Mr.Brine, way to stick wit the Swimbaits =D> Oh yeah Congrats on the 3,000th post

i guess when the fishing's good i stick to what i know and when im not catching as much i switch to stuff im unfamiliar with, may be my main problem. i like using a few rattle traps and some other lip less cranks that i got and i try to change up the retrieve but i have only been fishing bass for about a year now, before was a bait fisherman goin for striper/cats,and trout and sometimes troll

first year personnel best lil over 7 lbs 23"-24"
my buddy who i went fishing with in dec last year (who got me in to this bass kick) got a almost 14 pounder didnt belive it till i seen the pic with the digital scale my lakes got potential for some big ones

Nick,

A 7# for your first year is a great accomplishment. =D>

And something around 14# is an absolute MONSTER  Congrats to you and your buddy.

my buddy, i havnt fished with him too much but hes good he used to fish the local tournaments and stuff until it started getting real expensive for him

but we went in the dead of winter Christmas eve last year we were fishing deep like 40 50 feet with jigs and he was killin it he got like at least a dozen good ones 4 pound average id say i got one small one all day lol thats what got me stuck on it this year

i fished bass hard all year except the first month of summer when it started getting real hot then we started hitting it at night and have stoped bass fishing about a month ago too cold and slow

got the big one right before it started cooling down in oct

going trolling for trout with my uncle in the morning we fish for everything where as my buddy he only fishes for bass and he was asking all kinds of Q about trollin like i was the expert all of a sudden lol he has really only fished bass and striper
